A Cambodian Spring is an intimate and unique portrait of three people caught up in the chaotic and often violent development that is shaping modern-day Cambodia. Shot over six years, the film charts the growing wave of land rights protests that led to the ‘Cambodian Spring’ and the tragic events that followed. This film is about the complexities – both political and personal – of fighting for what you believe in.
The film has been screened at international film festivals in more than twenty countries around the world, winning numerous awards including the prestigious Special Jury Prize at Hot Docs International Documentary Festival and Best Documentary at the Brooklyn Film Festival. The film was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award and a One World Media Award and has an original soundtrack by the visionary electronic music composer James Holden.
Filmmaker Chris Kelly, the star of the film Venerable Sovath and Dr. Kathleen Cavanaugh from the Irish Human Rights Centre at NUI Galway will be in attendance to discuss the film in a Q&A with the audience after the 7pm screening on Wed 2nd May.
A Cambodian Spring is out on General Release from Friday 4th May.
