Synopsis
As the new girl in a primary school class, Shoko Nishimiya is keen to make friends. But the fact that she is a little bit different – she can’t hear – makes her an easy target for class bully Shoya Ishida. One day Shoya finally takes things too far, resulting in Shoko’s mother transferring her to a different school and the rest of Shoya’s class finally turning against him. Five years later, the teenage Shoya is tormented by the guilt of his past deeds. He decides that he must seek out Shoko and try to make amends. But has he left things too late? Based on a manga series by Yoshitoki Oima, A Silent Voice is a poignant coming-of-age story, which handles its themes of bullying and disability with both sensitivity and honesty.
